BMX
had its beginning back in the early 1970s when kids
began racing their bicycles on dirt tracks in Southern
California. Building a track with various jumps to
imitate their favorite motocross stars, gave birth to
what has become one of the fastest growing sports of our
time. Formally organized in 1974 by the National
Bicycle League (NBL), BMX
Racing took a big leap last year, as it became a full
Medal Sport in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, held in
Bejing, China!
BMX Bicycle Races are sprint
races held on a professionally designed off-road single lap
racetrack. The track usually consists of a downhill
starting gate for up to eight racers, a groomed
serpentine dirt racecourse made up of various jumps,
rollers, banked and flat corners (sometimes made of
asphalt), and a finish line.
The sanctioning body, the NBL, provides a set of rules governing
the conduct of the races, specifies age group and skill
level classifications among the racers, and maintains an
annual point accumulation system over the racing season.
BMX racing can be a fun way for the whole family to
enjoy a sport that encourages competition and is a great
form of exercise. There are classes for all ages
of Boys, Girls, Teens, Women, Men, Mom's & Dad's - if
you can ride a bike without training wheels, we've got a
class for you. It starts off with the 5 & Under
Rookie Class and goes the whole way up to the 50 & Over
class - so bring the whole family to the track for an
evening or weekend that will bring everyone together
cheering for each other!
The NBL standardizes
the rules for all its tracks across the country - so if
your going on vacation, you don't have to miss out on a
week of racing - simply take your bikes along - chances
are there will be a track near you!
Most of the BMX Racing
is done on the "Local Level" at a track near you.
However, should you want to venture out, there are races
at the State, Regional and National Levels as well.
To find out what you
need to race, check out our
Bike &
Racer Page
--- you'll be surprised, as its not as expensive or
complicated as you may think. If its your first
time racing, just tell one of the Volunteers running the
track and they'll be happy to get you hooked up with the
Track Director or one of the other Track Officials to
explain everything you'll need to know to have an
exciting, fun & safe first nite.
